A decade-plus after it became a defining anthem of modern country music, Darius Rucker’s version of “Wagon Wheel” has reached another historic milestone.

Before taking the stage at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Saturday, July 25, Rucker and Old Crow Medicine Show frontman Ketch Secor were surprised with Spotify’s prestigious Billions Club plaque, honoring Rucker’s iconic rendition of “Wagon Wheel” surpassing one billion streams on the platform.

The celebration became even more meaningful later that night, when the two multi-GRAMMY winners joined forces to perform the chart-topping hit together in front of a sold-out Red Rocks crowd — bringing the song’s extraordinary journey full circle as the songwriter and the artist behind its billion-stream success shared the moment together. “You never know where a song is going to take you, and I don’t think any of us could’ve imagined ‘Wagon Wheel’ would still mean this much to people all these years later,” Rucker shared. “To celebrate a billion streams with Ketch right before we walked out at Red Rocks made it even more special. I’m grateful to everybody who’s made this song part of their lives, and I’ll keep singing it as long as y’all let me!”

Originally completed by Secor after discovering an unfinished Bob Dylan demo featuring what would become the song’s unforgettable chorus, “Wagon Wheel” first became a fan favorite when Old Crow Medicine Show released their version in 2004. Rucker’s 2013 recording, featured on his album True Believers, transformed the song into a global country phenomenon — earning a GRAMMY Award, RIAA Diamond certification, and a permanent place among the genre’s most celebrated modern classics. “Songs have a funny way of finding their own path, and ‘Wagon Wheel’ has had one incredible life,” Secor reflected. “Watching Darius bring it around the world over the last decade has been one of the greatest gifts a songwriter could ever receive. Standing beside him at Red Rocks to celebrate this milestone felt like watching another beautiful chapter get written.”

Spotify’s Billions Club recognizes songs that surpass one billion streams on the platform, celebrating the artists and recordings that have achieved some of the most significant milestones in streaming history through exclusive plaques, original programming, live events, and more.

The milestone arrives during another major chapter for Rucker, who is currently traveling the country on his Songs of Summer Tour while also joining his Hootie & the Blowfish bandmates for select festival appearances. The country superstar was recently announced as the national anthem performer for WWE SummerSlam on Aug. 2 and will return to host the fifth annual Riverfront Revival festival in Charleston, S.C., on Oct. 9-10.

More than a decade after its release, “Wagon Wheel” continues to prove that the right song never fades, it only finds new generations ready to sing along.
