Nearly two decades after his last album of new original material, Clay Aiken is hitting rewind—and moving forward at the same time. The multi-platinum recording artist will release Rewind on September 25, 2026, marking his first album of new original music in 18 years. The nine-track collection arrives following Aiken’s highly anticipated return to the American Idol stage earlier this year, where he introduced the album’s title track to a national audience during the season finale.
Released May 11, “Rewind” represents Aiken’s first new original single in nearly two decades. Written by Colton Avery and Grammy-winning producer Dave Audé, and produced by Audé, the song pairs Aiken’s unmistakable vocals with contemporary pop production while offering a reflection on where he is today—rather than simply looking back at where he began. “I wasn’t interested in trying to recreate something I did 20 years ago,” Aiken says. “I wanted to make music that feels like me now.”
That distinction may be the heart of Rewind. While the title naturally evokes nostalgia, Aiken isn’t attempting to recreate the early-2000s phenomenon that made him a household name. Instead, the album finds the singer reconnecting with his voice, his audience and a new chapter of his musical life.
Aiken first rose to national prominence as the runner-up on season two of American Idol, quickly transforming that television exposure into a blockbuster recording career. His debut album, Measure of a Man, entered the Billboard 200 at No. 1 and went multi-platinum, while “This Is the Night” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with record-setting first-week sales.
Since then, Aiken has built a career that extends well beyond the recording studio. He has released multiple albums, headlined national tours, appeared on Broadway in Monty Python’s Spamalot, competed on The Celebrity Apprentice and become a New York Times bestselling author with his memoir Learning to Sing. But music has always remained a central part of the Aiken story—and Rewind represents something of a homecoming. “It’s been a long time since I’ve made an album of new music, and I don’t think I would have made this same album even a few years ago,” Aiken says. “There’s obviously a little nostalgia in Rewind, but I wasn’t interested in trying to recreate something I did 20 years ago.”
His return also carries significance beyond entertainment. A former special education teacher, Aiken co-founded the National Inclusion Project, which supports inclusive programming for children with disabilities, and served for nearly a decade as a UNICEF ambassador, traveling internationally to advocate for children’s rights and access to education. Now, with Rewind, Aiken is bringing the conversation back to music. For longtime fans, the album offers the excitement of hearing a familiar voice again.
