Australian singer-songwriter Justin Davies makes a striking first impression with the forthcoming release of his poignant new single, “Unforgettable Days,” set to arrive next month. The track is the first glimpse of Davies’ deeply personal full-length debut album, slated for later this year, and signals the arrival of a uniquely reflective voice in contemporary music.
Recorded at Poons Head Studio on Australia’s west coast with acclaimed producer Rob Grant—a double Grammy nominee and multi-time WAMI award winner—“Unforgettable Days” features an exceptional lineup of Perth-based musicians, including drummer Malcolm Clark and bassist Jay Cortez (both formerly of Aussie alt-rock heroes The Sleepy Jackson), alongside members of the internationally recognized West Australian Symphony Orchestra.
The track was captured using Poons Head’s extraordinary collection of vintage analog equipment, including the Pultec EQ from the Rolling Stones Mobile and the Fairchild Compressor from Kingsway Studios, London—the same gear behind classics like Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze” and The Beatles’ “It’s All Too Much.” Over the years, the studio and Grant have worked with a host of international artists, from Lenny Kravitz and Miley Cyrus to Tame Impala, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and Death Cab for Cutie.
“‘Unforgettable Days’ is about lost love, but more importantly, the beauty and magic that surrounds certain moments in life,” Davies explains. “It’s the feeling that lingers long after those days have passed. The song reflects on a young love—moments in the sun, kisses that healed, the simple joy of humming songs together. Even with the pain of loss, the memories remain overwhelmingly beautiful.”
Davies’ path to music was far from conventional. The youngest member of a musical family—siblings include ARIA Award-winning musician Ashley Davies and acclaimed singer-songwriter Tanya-Lee Davies—he spent most of his adult life as a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist in Western Australia. Yet the haunting loss of a loved one to a fatal overdose more than two decades ago left an enduring ache, shaping the emotional core of his creative voice.
In 2023, a serendipitous encounter with a guitar at a local music shop changed everything. Though a novice player, Davies felt an immediate connection to the instrument. The songs came quickly, a natural outpouring of grief, memory, and longing. Within a year, he had amassed enough material for a full album, each track offering a window into his journey of heartbreak, hope, and healing.
“It’s time and meant to be,” Davies says of releasing “Unforgettable Days.” “Without the sadness and searching, I wouldn’t have found my peace within the songs. They might never have surfaced. It’s not an overly complicated song, but it’s the best thing I’ve ever done.”
